A medium-size tree commonly growing throughout most of Europe where it forms part of temperate mixed deciduous forests as a subdominant tree. It is also appreciated as an ornamental plant for its buttered yellow coloured foliage in autumn. Has been used as a hedging plant in the past, hence its other name the Hedge Maple
